Yemen Chamelion Natural Habitat

The Yemen Chamelion can be found on the low humid coastal plains, the mountain slopes, and the high plateaus of Yemen or the arid western coast of Saudi Arabia. Therefore it seems to easily adapt to different environments.

Chamelion Behaviour

Each of these chameleons has their own personality and are quite a solitary species. They can be let out under supervision occasionally. Try to get your chameleon to eat from your hand, this will help to build his confidence in you and tame him.

Captive Environment

A  vivarium, about 36” high, 24” wide & 24” deep for an adult is adequate. A basking bulb should be provided and live or plastic plants should be arranged around the viv. Bark chippings are a good substrate for this animal.  Veiled chameleons can be taken out into the sunlight on a hot day, but be very careful not to lose them.

Yemen Chamelion Vivarium Temperature

Basking area 90-95F, use a basking bulb on a thermostat to create this temperature. Nightime temp is around 70F to allow proper resting. A UV light should be used for 12-14hrs a day.

Humidity

The chameleon needs medium humidity 50 – 60%. A good flow of fresh air is also essential to prevent respiratory problems and bacteria build up in the cage. They need to be misted with warm water twice a day.

Water Requirements

Careful attention to water requirements should be taken with chameleons, a bowl in the bottom of the vivarium is NOT sufficient as these creatures prefer to drink dripping water, ie: morning dew off the leaves, therefore a waterfall is a good idea.  The vivarium should also be misted by spraying several times a day.

Nutritional Requirements

Flies, crickets, grasshoppers, butterflies, roaches, wax worms, stick insects and mealworms.  Gut feed all insects before feeding the chameleons for added nutrition.  Veiled chameleons sometimes will supplement their water intake by eating leafy greens and vegetables.
