African Grey Parrot…. There are two species of the African Grey Parrot, the Congo African Grey and the Timneh African Grey. The Timnehs are smaller in size than the Congos and do not have the vibrant red-tail colour of the Congo but still make a fantastic pet. The African Grey Parrot is a beautiful bird which is known for its personality and intelligence.Parrots are some of the most intelligent birds and if you are looking for a chatty parrot then the African Grey is the one you want as this species is best known for its talking abilities. Parrots have a characteristic features which are a strong curved bill an upright stance, strong legs and clawed feet. Parrots diets consist of seeds, nuts, fruit buds and other plant material, small pieces of fruit and vegetables can be given as treats, always make sure that your parrot as fresh drinking water and that it is changed daily. Apples, grapes and carrots are the usual favourites but you must not give your parrot any chocolate, lettuce, avocado or any sweets as these can be harmful to parrots. Parrots are fine living alone for short amounts of time but they do like a lot of attention, they are most active during the day and if kept indoors they still need regular exercise, so attaching some horizontal climbing bars to the outside of their cage and buying them some toys to stimulate them is a good idea, (please make sure that when letting your parrot out of its cage all of your doors and windows are closed). The cage for your African Grey Parrot should be big enough so that the bird is able to stretch out and open its wings without them touching the sides of its cage, (make sure that you don’t position the cage in a draught or on direct sunlight. When it comes to training your African Grey patience and practice, practice, practice, the best way to train your African Grey is to simply show them what you would like them to do and repeat this until they understand your intentions.
